  • How to distinguish Windows 10 license type is OEM, Retail, or Volume?
    Time: Nov. 28, 2019

You can quickly and easily verify the type of Windows 10 license installed on your device.

Microsoft offers Windows 10 licenses on many channels, subject to different rules. However, for most users, it is only possible to purchase a license through the distribution channel or the OE channel.

An Windows 10 OEM license refers to the license that a manufacturer installs on new devices. In this case, the product key is not transferable and you cannot use it to activate another installation. Unless you re-enable a new installation on the same computer.

A Retail license refers to the license you bought when you bought a copy of Windows 10 at your local store or at an online retailer (such as CDKoffers). If you have a commercial Windows 10 license, you can transfer the product key to another computer as long as you deactivate the previous device.

A volume license is designed for a large company, an educational and government setting. In general, volume-licensed companies can use a single main product key to allow the installation of Windows 10. Although you can use this license several times on different computers, it cannot be transferred with the device if the system changes hands or Activate devices that are not part of the organization.

If you want to reuse the same product key on another computer or simply request the type of license installed on your device, you can find out using the Windows Server License Manager scripting tool.

To verify the type of product key installed in Windows 10:
    1. Open Start.
    2. Locate the command prompt, right-click on the main result and select Run as administrator.
    3. Enter the following command to determine the type of license and press Enter

    4. Confirm the type of license with the information available in the Windows Script Host dialog box.

Once these steps are completed, you will know what product key you are using in Windows 10. This also determines if you can transfer the license to another computer.
